Like you I wanted a small shaper and ended up with a old 18" unit because the price was right. If you can use a larger unit they are the most economical, some times free. If you want to build one look at "Home Shop Machinist" magazine or the following sites Http://ml.aol.com/lughaid/Shaper.htm
