Greg: Try shorting across the resistor. If it runs, leave it shorted--permanently unless it burns up the coil or points. Then you have other problems in ignition. But I doubt that it will.
I had a JD 50 (12V) that also wouldn't run with the resistor in line. Shorted it out. Tractor ran fine for years. Still would if I took it out of retirement!
