I don't think that it's to cover up the sale of pictures of "nekked" women. I think that in at least the case of the car I wanted to buy, it was meant to ensure that the bidder didn't catch on to the fact he/she would be bidding against the seller. In the auction I first noticed this on, the seller stated that it was to ensure that other sellers of similar cars didn't contact "HIS" bidders and lure them away with competitive offers. I think that MY interprtetation---the seller is bidding against me, either through an alternate ID of his own, or else using a "friend" to make false "run the bid up" bids in order to get the high, unreasonable "target" price. I would complain, except that ironclad, admissable in court EVIDENCE would be required, not just my own gut feelings! I quit bidding on such items.
