Well what I have done in this situation, which isn't the best but works and gives you some ohter information too, is to put a sending unit in the upper radiator hose. Weld a pipe bushing with the right size internal threads into a tube or pipe. You can use electrical conduit, pipe, whatever. I have turned them down from regular pioe to fit the hose size. the length of pipe or tube is long enough for the sending unit in the center and a hose on each side. To help retain the hose I have welded a bead around each end, turned a ring as I turned the piece from pipe. Whatever works. This of course gives you the temp only after the thermostat opens. Assuming you have a working thermostat you can tell what is happening. It has hleped me to keep the engine running up to temp. as the gauge will read less than thermostat rating until the thermostat opens and begins to circulate all the time. I cover the radiator in winter to get this condition. Without the radiator covered with cold weather the radiator cools too much, the thermostat shuts down, and the radiator cools even more, the engine is always getting very cool or cold coolant. Covering the radiator allows you to tailor the size of it for the conditions and keep the coolant circulating.

I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t
