In the mid-'50's, we were trying to pick corn on frozen ground. We had an 8N with a set of "clamshell" steel lugs for the back. I've never seen another set, the made of pipe & angle iron, hinged on one side, you jacked the tractor up, slipped it over the tire & clamped down. would go almost anywhere. We were on river bottom ground going great until it broke thru what my Dad called "hardpan". The more we tried to get it out, the lower it sank. It finally got to the point that we were shoveling the blue jello-like mud out from around the engine fan in order to run the engine. My uncles M wouldn't shake it. They finally used a block & tackle w/cable tied between an oak tree with cable attached to the angle iron lugs on the rear wheels & let it wind itself out to the point that the M would pull it. Not exactly OSHA approved! Seems funny now, no one was laughing at the time.
