Well, if it is just spinning and not engaging, you need a drive. Supposedly the new and improved ratchet drives are best...If it isn't even turning, then you need to do a little detective work with a voltmeter and see if you actually have 6 volts at the starter when you push the starter button. If it's an old tractor that hasn't seen a lot of care lately, go ahead and take apart all the connections in the starter circuit and clean them up till shiny bright and then reassemble tightly. If that doesn't do it you very well may need to bring the starter into the shop for testing and rebuilding or replacement.DONT play with the starter drive or you will be sorry..they are very hard to retract on certain types once you've spun them out.... As far as starter removal, you very well may need to pull the block drain spigot and possibly even loosen up the oil filter canister to get clearance to pull the starter. It also helps to put nuts on the through bolts to hold the starter together while you struggle at finding just the right angle/spot/technique to remove it. Some will use a die grinder and make a little more clearance to install the new one. Good luck, and post your results over on the N board. Truck
