Thanks for the words, everyone. So far I took off
the starter and had it tested (it's fine), checked
the battery (ditto) and switched off the pto &
disengaged the mower from the shaft. I didn't
know to spin the flywheel manually, but I should
have a break in my work today or tomorrow to get
up there and check that out. The busted
crankshaft (I mistakenly wrote camshaft. Sorry.)
is what a mechanic I know who's had & worked on
tractors forever said it is "98% sure". He's very
old and can't get out to the site to look at it,
though. I appreciate all the interest and
advice. I actually feel a little better after
reading what y'all wrote. Maybe there's hope.
