Bernhard,

Wow.. tell me if I'm doing this right. There are 4,046 square meters in a U.S. acre. If we split the difference and say around $135 per m2, that works out to nearly $550,000 per acre for land!

I'm going to put out a sign that says: Sie Sind jetz in Deutschland - or just declare our place part of Germany when we sell our land. I could use 10 to 15 million bucks!

Basic economics says that in the USA a lot of the land is valued to a point where it becomes uneconomical to farm. At the same price for corn and beans over the last 20 to 30 years, and all the input costs rising over that time no wonder the largest single crop in the USA is lawn grass. There's a lot to be said for maintaining the ability to feed ourselves, so we have subsidies for American agriculture.

If people complain about the amount of farm subsidies here, they must be incredible in Germany, and other places in Europe. In Japan, for example, rice costs 5 times more than it costs here because of expensive land, inefficient methods, government subsidies and import tariffs because those Japanese farmers with their little rice paddies have a lot of political power. I know it's not that bad in Germany, but you must import a lot of food from Italy, or Spain, or Eastern Europe.

You have more selection and somewhat better prices on tractors -- but that land value is a killer. On a relative scale, though, I suppose a German farmer is like most American farmers, that is, land rich and cash poor.

Steve

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing. ... [Read Article]
