My 420 has a valve that has to be set to one position so that both arms can be locked together (you leave one control lever all the way back, and use the other one only). In the other valve position, each arm works independently, and you remove the pin that locks the arms together.
The valve is under the seat frame somewhere.
Does your 40 have the same setup?
