The exact placement of the resistor in the circuit is of no importance. As long as the resistor is somewhere between the ignition switch and the points is all that is required. Voltage drop and a corosponding amperage reduction occurs regardless of resistor location. It isn't the voltage that burns points, it is the amperage. Current (amperage) is constant throughout a live circuit. That is, if measured in several locations the meter will read the same each time. Voltage (or more appropriately the voltage drop) on the other hand is measured across each component in the circuit. Depending on the resistance of that component, voltage drop varies but the total voltage drop will add up to equal the supply voltage. Mount the resistor (assuming you are going to use the 6 volt coil) anywhere in the circuit that is convienent. Be sure to secure it to the sheetmetal some place to sink (draw) the heat away from the resistor. If the resistor gets too hot the value (total resistace of the resistor) will go up and lower the availible voltage to the coil slightly, thereby reducing secondary voltage.

The Fordson F Ignition System - by Anthony West. A fellow restorer contacted me earlier this year asking for some help and advice on a model F that he was restoring. He had over a period of months spent a fair amount of his hard earned cash on replacement parts for the old "trembler" ignition. Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
