My diesel Oliver 1800 (bought used) has two 12V batteries connected in parallel. They aren't taking a charge, so I'm going to replace them. My manual calls for two 6V batteries connected in series with a capacity of 168 amp-hours. Both scenarios provide 12V to electrical system, but I'm wondering about current capacity, starting, charging, etc. The series connection should result in higher current through the batteries (theoretically twice the current). I noticed that the manual calls for a single 12V for gasoline engines. Can someone explain why the two 6V series setup is specified for diesel engines? Also, what should I be looking for in a diesel tractor battery as opposed to a gas engine battery? Thanks.
