Bill, Big Fred there nailed the answer right on the head. The double voltage of the 220 motor indeed draws only 1/2 the current of a 110 motor. In industry it saves a bundle cause you only have to run 1/2 the copper to the motor and as Fred said, theres less voltage drop on the lines therefore at 1/2 the current. Also, on single split phase capacitor start motors, the starting capacitors will draw less current and may last longer plus the centrifugal switches also draw less current and last better. 220 single phase better than 110, but three phase way way way better.
