Don't want you to be drownded for sure! I'm no guru, but one thing you said makes me think the ignition timing is way far advanced. The clanking and clicking under load. If advanced far enough, I think that could cause your problems, especially since you say it did run and pull well. I'd probably just loosen the clamp and retard the timing a bit to check it. If you don't know which way to go, just pull the distributor cap, and watch which way the rotor turns while cranking the engine over. Then turn the distributor housing that same direction a few degrees, like maybe 5 or 8 degrees, and put it back together, see if you can tell a noticeable difference. If that ain't it, it must be sumpin else! Good luck.
