There are rules to using ether, just like anything- NEVER use it in conjunction with glow plugs or manifold heaters. I have started engines with it for 30 years and never had a problem, or got an engine "hooked" on it. the way I see it, it's better to give 'er a little sniff than to run the batteries down or burn up the starter. And yes, Detroits are notorious for needing ether. I look at ether like Jack Daniels- a little bit is good, but too much will give you a headache. Ron.
