The 24 volt will not work with 12 volts. It may have power to pull itself. If you take it to someone who works on starters they may be able to change a series winding to a parelall winding to convert it to 12 volts. (depends on the motor design) Otherwise buy a series-parelall switch and a second 12 volt battery. This will allow your two 12 volts to be in series for 24 volts for running the winch, and 12 volts (parelall) at all other times. JC Whitney used to sell these switches.
