The old MH/MF tractors used about the equvilent of 80-90-140 in the hydraulic (transmission-rear end). If it works at all you've got a good start. MF now uses Permatran oil in place of the heavy oil.(It's about equivalent to the SAE of 10w-30.) I would suggest to at least change the oil and try again. Take off the right side cover and try the linkage.If the lift is jerky probably the pump needs attention. Take off the top cover.Remove the drive shaft,pull the PTO out about 10 inches, remove the pin on each side of the housing and lift out the pump.
