Here's a link to free UK info on agricultural safety for anyone who's interested. In the tractor section you'll find a leaflet on how to avoid tractors overturning, at least from the most obvious and forseeable causes. Hitching above the axle is covered in some detail. OSHA probably have something similar in US. Snag about safety is that people don't know what they don't know. What's commonsense to someone who knows the risk is not always forseeable to someone who hasn't come across the situation before, even if they are smart. If you get away with it, you learn, if not... e.g. If you're splitting a tractor for a clutch repair don't do it without wedging the pivot point of the front axle! Obvious to everyone? Or not? I admit to being wise to this one only after a certain event!
