T-Bone, I feed out 18-20 head of heifers and steers in Iowa and do it by feeding big round bales, automatic waterers, and a Smidley Steer Stuffer. A Steer Stuffer is nothing more that a self feeder that the cattle can eat out of when ever they want. Since I am in Iowa, I use ground corn with protein (I use Kent Feeds) and dump it into the Steer Stuffer. I travel alot so this method works well and is very low labor. My wife checks the waterers and feed during the week. A 20X20 pen seems small and they will be standing in their own manure most of the time if this size is used. I suggest a larger pen. From birth to 1300-1400 lbs will take around 18mos. I would encourage you to try it as it will be a very good learning experience for you. A beef web site is www.beef.org.
