In early January I found that our Mercedes diesel car wouldn't start without the blockheater running for prolonged periods because of the cold. For reference we had a long period of temps around 0. So I had the 15-40 conventional oil taken out and 10-30 synthetic put in.
Before the swap the car would never start below 20 without heating. After the swap it would start down to about 5 degrees and only require about 10 minutes of heating down to about 0. Below 0 at least half an hour of heating was due. I plan to have the car on a 10k change schedule, unfortunately its got other issues so I won't be keeping it past this summer, but I was amazed at the short term benefits of the synthetic. It also appears to be leaking less oil than it did with conventional,(was leaking about 1/2qt a month) but I really need another couple months running before I can confirm that.
