Ford (Jacobsen) garden tractors use a "rag" joint similar to that on many automotive steering shafts, only bigger, for the connection between the engine and the hydro trans. I have 12, 14 & 16HP models and these joints have lasted for years. Both my brother and I have built log splitters using "lovejoy" couplings between the 8HP engines and the hydraulic pumps with absolutely no evidence of wear after years of use. Like someone else here said, they should be lined up as close as possible and there should be no movement in either shaft. You may be right in that the "shock" of the electric clutch engagement is causing the problem. Incidentally, Lovejoy has two series of couplers, one for up to 11HP and a HD series for up to 23HP.

I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
