How much to charge for snowplowing - an answer:

There was a discussion a on this board a few days ago about rates for snowplowing. Talked to a fellow today who's business covers an area in west central Michigan. In the rural and small town area their charges are in the $50/hour area. Their small city customers are paying $60/hour, and in the big city prices run in the neighborhood of $80/hour. Typical residential driveways start at $15 to $20. This is for a conventional 4wd truck with blade and operator. Commercial parking lots requiring additional services such as a loader, dumptruck, etc. are of course much higher. Many of the larger jobs are done on a yearly contract where the contractor prays for no snow, and the owner prays for enough snow to make him feel that he broke even! You may want to consider this in setting your rates. While I have your attention, let me share an experience I had a few years back. I have a plow, and use it for my own farm, and do a few of my friends and neighbors, and plow out the church lot. I do not charge nor do I ask for contributions. This is my way of being a good neighbor. Anyway, one of the neighbor ladies called me one winter, and aksed if I'd mind clearing the drive for wheelchair/shut-in lady nearby, whom she was helping out with daily visits. So, for about two winters, I kept her drive cleared, no charge - out of the goodness of my heart. Following winter, the first snow, I got a call from this lady - when was I going to get her drive cleared?..... I told her that I was on my way to church, and I'd drive thru and check it out. When I got back, I called her and told her that there was only an inch or so, that it didn't need plowing, that I didn't even have the plow on my truck, and since the ground wasn't frozen, I'd end tearing up her yard something fierce. To which she replied, "Well, I guess I'll be having Bob ______ do my yard from now on." I know Bob, and he doesn't do anything without payment. But I never got one word of thanks from this woman.
