I would disagree with 2 things, but a good explination. Live has always been decribed to me as having a second clutch. Basically the live 2-stage clutch in a Ford x6x series tractor. I have never heard of a live pto as having only one clutch - ever. It would still then not be free-wheeling. Then I have not heard of a 2-stage clutch as being 'independent' at all. It is just live, not independent? To me, independent has always meant totally & completely independent of the foot pedal & clutch. Independent can be made to spin or stop at any time, no matter what you are doing with the tranny clutch. My H has a dependent pto - it always spins at the same rpm, but is not live or independent. The Ford 960 & 1720 have a live clutch - 2-stage clutch within a clutch, you can shift gears in the tranny with the pto still powered. You do need to stop moving forward to put the pto in gear. The IH 300 & s77 Oliver are independent - they have a lever that controls the pto clutch all by itself - totally independent of whatever I am doing with the tranny & foot clutch. The Ford 7700 & TW-20 have independent hyd clutches - work as the previous, but the lever uses hydraulics to move the pto clutch. Many of us do not like the hydraulic clutches. They mostly all have a hydraulic brake. They mostly all are 'instant on' or 'instant off' and can be very, very hard on certain pto equipment - no feathering. This depends on what you do & what you are used to. But some of these can really slam flywheel equipment hard, or twist the pto shaft/ strip gears on a grain auger for example. --->Paul
