Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'll follow up with your recommendation. Before sending my first note, I checked my methodology by testing the voltage across the battery of an operating, walk-behind brush mower; the VOM indicated 12.7V. The fact that the walk-behind doesn't have an alternator pretty much discounts any useful conclusions about the tractor but it did suggest that my VOM was working correctly.

I didn't consider an AC leak back to the battery or that a digital VOM may be too "sophisticated". By the way, I replaced the tractor's battery yesterday before checking the voltage. The old battery was seeping. Could an AC leak could damage a battery?
