Jim, Your garbled readings may indicate alternating current leakage into the system. Switch your meter to AC and check when it is running. You shouldn't have more than maybe 1.2 volts AC with the lights on & everything else that takes current on as well. There will always be some AC ripple on the DC voltage, but too much indicates a diode problem. If you have an old analog (dial) voltmeter, you may have better luck getting a good running DC voltage reading. The slow response of the needle damps out the AC component. Pat
