Continental L226 Manifold

The L226 has a split manifold that has(had) a butterfly in the exhaust manifold. This is completely rusted out and would leave the intake manifold exposed to exhaust gases if left the way it is. Will it work to just put a piece of steel between the intake and exhaust manifolds when I put it back together? Can I just leave it alone? Thanks for any recommendations.
