Dan, the ball should be no more than 6" ahead of the centerline of the axle. I have two trucks with gooseneck balls. one is placed at 6, and the other is placed at 4 inches. The one that is placed 6 inches ahead is much easier to back up and just plain get around with. I am not sure if the 2 inches is really what makes the difference. Also, what kind of trailer do you have? is it tandem duals? triple singles? I have noticed that the triple single trailer really bounces bad when it is empty. It is not just mine, but also every other triple axle trailer that I have pulled did this. The tandem duals is a very good trailer to pull. It is a much smoother ride.
