John A. ....You might consider the laundry soap as the culprit causing your ear problems. I believe that some soaps cause problems to the top of my ears as well as my shins. It causes a rash with itching. The problem used to be severe, but now seems to be tapering off over a period of years. I think the clothing transfers the chemicals to the skin, causing a reaction. The lower cost soaps cause the least problems. AND I wash my caps the old way: a small scrub brush and shampoo in the shower.
