On the hydro unit, usually in the very front, is the "charge pump" that picks up oil from the reservoir, and "charges" the main hydro piston pump with oil. On a tractor with hydraulic lift, this pressure is also used for the lift system. This is where your problem lies... this pump is turning backwards, and not "charging" your piston pump with oil. Operating it for any length of time in this manner will burn out your hydro's piston pump due to lack of lubrication.

On some L&G tractor hydrostatics, specifically some Sundstrands, you can turn the charge pump housing 1/2 turn, and the unit will work fine in the opposite direction. The charge pump casting on these is labeled LH on one side and RH on the other. Even if you happen to have one of these, and could reverse the charge pump, your speed control lever would still operate backwards... forward movement of the lever would cause reverse movement of the tractor!

Are you intending to use a mower deck with this setup, and have you realized that it also would turn backwards, unscrewing your blades!

Some of the old Case or Ingersol tractors had the engine mounted opposite most other tractors, and henceforth, had the mover discharge chute on the left side, as opposed to the more common right side, due to the reverse rotation of the blades.
