As for the discussion on 3-26-99, I grew up grinding feed, running a buzz saw, and a few other assorted chores, all using flat belt machinery. While I know some machinery had pulleys with a slightly raised center, not one of ours did. After overhauling a tractor ( JD Two Cylinder ), I still belt another tractor to it to start the break-in process. The only reason to twist a belt is to run the driven pulley in the right direction. Keeping the belt on is as simple as pulley alignment. Belt slapping is caused either by a belt that is not tight enough, or unevenly pulled load, such as pulling a two-cylinder J D down too far. It also is important for keeping the belt on that all surfaces are cleen and dry. I hope this helps.
