One of the reasons given to me for twisting the flat belt was to lessen the effect that wind had on the long belts. Like how a sign sets up a harmonic twisting in the wind. The twisted belt closed up the gap so the wind was not able to get at the entire length of the belt.
When they put a steam engine on a threshing machine the belt is always twisted and the steam engine could run the driving pulley in either direction.
