Heisler overdrive removal troubles, Farmall M

I'm trying to remove a broken ( components missing )Heisler overdrive from a 1951 M and relpace it with an original brake assy. and cover. I have removed all components down to the plate which bolts on the transfer case. Does anyone know if the this entire shaft for the left brake assy. was swapped out and replaced with one for the overdrive kit? I'm stuck at this point and do not want to continue if it involves pulling the top plate for the transfer case. I cannot remove the bearing/shaft support plate from the case.
Any suggestions or help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
