You’re right. The first alternator I ever saw was along about '61 and most manufactures didn't make the change over until the early '63s if my memory serves me right. That was quite a while ago! :>)

These new models had the huge advantage of being able to charge at higher rates at lower Rpm’s and made use of slip rings rather than a commutator.

Just like the newer induction type starters of today, this stopped the problem of the unit cannibalizing itself and eating it's own brushes.

Regulators started dropping out in the early ‘70s, as I recall, and some really good designs started showing up around 1980 with the advent of the single wire alternator.

Then, the marketing guys got their fingers in the pie and that 1980’s alternator, which sold for $54 at that time, now will ding you somewhere around $600 using the same technology. Go figure.
