Garden tractor recommendation

I'm a tractor novice, but this looks like the
place for some passionate advice. Here's the deal. I need a garden (or lawn)
tractor to mow about a 1/2 acre lawn. Want a
bagger and a utility cart. Some day, maybe a plow
to push some dirt around. I was just getting
ready to buy a John Deere LX277 and set down
$4000, when I started looking at the Want
Advertiser (in MA) for used tractors. There are
quite a few tractors to choose from, but I'm a bit
lost. I see some Wheel horses (B15, 12HP), Cub
Cadets, Gravelys (424), and Deeres. Here's a few of my questions:
1 - what is the min HP, or the ideal HP that I
should look for?
2 - how old of a machine should I consider? 5, 10
years old? I found a Deere 318 with 320 hours for
$3900, but I have no idea if 320 is a lot of hours
or if it's the equilivent to low milage?
3 - what brands, years, and models to look for?
4 - what are some good questions to find out over
the phone when I call about the tractors?
5 - what to look for when I look at the machines?
