NFPA standards for fire apparatus require seatbelts for every seat. Fire/rescue/EMS & police are not exempt from seatbelt requirements in my state. Having served my community in the volunteer fire/rescue service for the past 29 years and a few thousand vehicle accidents, I can't remember a seatbelt buckle that failed to release, even though I do carry a tool to cut it just in case it ever does happen. I have seen more than a few people who were dead because they didn't wear a seatbelt though. Didn't that fool sherriff even have a fire extinguisher or a pocketknife? Even with that, I still think adults should have the right to decide for themselves whether to wear one or not.
