I have no experience with Pertronix and was curious of the design of their control module. Sounds like Pertronix II might be a worthwile upgrade. Is the Pertronix/Pertronix II triggered by a magnetic pickup or does it use a photo cell/shutter wheel system? The Chrysler electronic ignition system on my 4020 and an early Ford duraspark system I have do draw power with the ignition on and engine not running. I did not notice any coil heating after about 10 min,but the ballast resistors were too hot to touch.
