T030 starter won't crank, but sparks are flyin'

I was out in the barn a couple nights ago prepping my Ferguson T0-30 for mowing. I tried the starter and it didn't catch, and on the second try, it turned and quit dead. I tried the starter again (my tractor is 12v, uses a dash-mounted starter switch), but I only got a clunk or tick from the starter and then nothing. The battery was dead so I charged it; still nothing but a click and silence. I tried to jumper 12v to the starter, and man, talk about sparks flying! It's like the starter is shorted to ground. I'm heading out to the barn to look at it, take the starter off and either fix it or replace it. Any suggestions are appreciated! OldKyJim
