Ky Jim, The starters can get their teeth stuck with the flywheel teeth which locks them up but rocking the engine by having it in gear and rolling usually unsticks it. Loosen the bolts and see if its stuck engaged. Also, if the bearings are worn bad causing the armature to drag the field coils, that plays %&^%$$%$ with them. Loosen it up first to see if its free but if its not stuck with the flywheel and still acts badly, it may have a grounded out armature. If the brushes are worn bad it will not crank over but then they shouldnt spark badly? John T in Indiana
