The 302 will be OK for hauling in the box but it won't handle much on a trailer. If you are only hauling something on a trailer very infrequently and not too far you'll get by. The 302 is a good engine but not enough power for hauling. A 351 is the minimum you'll want for that. If you could find a good old F250 of similar age with a 6.9 diesel you would probably like it. Not to be compared with todays diesels but very reliable and better on fuel than either the 302 or 351. I had one for many years, put on almost 400,000 miles when it blew a head gasket (2 years ago) and I parked it because the body was shot. I put on 1 injector pump, 1 injector, 2 water pumps, a fuel supply pump, an alternator, several starters, 1 rear end, and no work to the transmission. That's all I did to the drive train in all those years and miles; plus the usual tires and brakes.
