Kurt: If you haven't rode a snowmobile in 20 years, you will be absolutely AMAZED how far they've came. Most of the newer sleds are oil-injected and a very large number are liquid-cooled as well. Reliability is far better than the old ones, and the handling and suspension are better by a factor of 10. Depending on what you're planning on doing with it, a 500 would be perfectly adequate for trail riding and such. On a used sled, the engine is of course the most important part--evidence of abuse, modification, or neglect is a good reason to look elsewhere. The track is another important item--they're not all that expensive or difficult to replace, but if they fail they can take out other components with them, such as the radiator, which on many sleds is located just above the track in the tunnel. A studded track, while nice for traction and braking, plays merry heck with the track, particularly if the studs are long or there are a lot of them.
