That vintage of FIOD, AOD, and AODE required Mercon (XT-2-QDX). Do not mix Mercon with Mercon V as the Mercon V has about 30% synthetic and the Lubrizol additive package will cause deterioration of the friction material adhesives and some deterioration of the Viton seals. That vintage also had a governor mounted on the OutPut Shaft. This sintered governor body was driven by the output shaft via a 1/4" ball sitting in a pocket in the OPS. The point contact eventually wears into the sintered metal governor body and the governor body clocks or rotates out of allignment with the oil feed holes in the OPS. This causes slow and sluggish shift response. This transmission also used several shift accumulators which can get sticky and leaky and also cause slow shift response. Not much you can do here short of a complete rebuild. This transmission used a mechanical throttle linkage to set shift pressure rather than a vacuum module. The connection or lever to control this shift pressure is located at the drivers side of the transmission and it rotates a shaft which runs through the center of the manual shift lever. Make sure that this smaller lever and shaft are free to rotate easily. There must not be any binding from dirt debris, bent shafts or binding throttle cables or rods. It must move effortlessly. You can check this while parked and engine off. Hope this helps.

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
