I would also bet the alternator Has been fitted with a 1 wire regulator. That being said,I have on atleast two occasions Had a 3 wire Delco 10SI alternator with a stock three wire regulator self excite without any power to the Regulator excite wire (#1). I use a home built alternator/generator test stand where I disconnect the battery when the stand will not be used for a day or so. I use a Delco regulator plug with both #1 and #2 wires connected together and fed power through a small ammeter to read field current draw. The alternator output is connected to a large ammeter and a carbon pile to test output, and all this powered by a Battery. At least twice I have connected a repaired 10SI Delco to the test stand and spun it up only to see the voltage come up to normal, but not indicate any output to the battery/carbon pile. In both cases I had not connected the battery to the test stand, yet the alternator had excited itself from residual magnetism in the rotor poles, just like one with a 1 wire regulator. A sensitive stock 3 wire regulator can self excite the stock alternator, but should charge unregulated if the #2 (sense) terminal is not connected to output voltage. The 1 wire regulators work without a sense wire connected,so I suspect they read system voltage internally from the Diode trio.

Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
