Other thing you could do is put a litter box in the barn (keep it fresh) and the cats might start using it (easier to dig in). Friend has a small sand box for his kids to play in, seemed like every cat for blocks came by to take a dump in it - finally had to put a lid on it to keep them out. Only reason he could think of iis that it was so much easier for them to dig and bury in it.
