The solenoid engages the starter drive momentarily before the starter motor in energized so the drive is not alrady spinning when it hits the ring gear.Sounds like your drive isn't being engaged.Usually its the switch plate in the solenoid switch that gets arced and doesn't make good contact.On some solenoids it is possible to remove the plastic end cap and reverse the swith plate.It is most likely the solenoid switch but could also be a problem with the drive gear or the ring gear teeth.Depending upon how many cylinders an engine has, the engine always stops in one of two places on a 4 cylinder and one of three places on a 6 cylinder So the ring gear takes a bit of a beating in those areas after time.
