Transmission Fluid 1959 Fordson Dexta

Waiting on service manual but believe transmission requires 14 quarts of 80/90 Gl-4 or 5 oil (Posted by GEO on 4/13/99. Questions: How often should the fluid be changed? How does one check the level? With the gear shift mechanism plate removed it appears the gears are getting adequate lubrication but the fluid has a little bit of a milky appearance. Is it possible to ingest water into this area or is that normal color? Will probably want to change this oil if it is a prudent thing to do but not anxious to buy 14 quarts of oil if not needed.
