You mentioned this tractor doesn't have the characteristic "deisel knock" you are used to hearing on your Kubotas. It is possible the injector pump is slightly out of time and worth looking into. IF you can drive the tractor in high gear up a fair grade without excessive blue smoke the engine is PROBABLY OK. IF it's black smoke better look into timing/nozzles/injector pump......in that order.
