The older HOBBS hour meters recorded time the engine was running. They were connected thru a pressure switch to an oil line or gallery on the engine. When the engine was started, the oil pressure closed the electrical circuit and activated the meter. When the engine was shut down, the oil pressure dropped and opened the circuit, shutting off the meter. These will work on any engine with pressure lube system. I installed many of these on Euclid earthmoving equipment. Joe
