Replacing outer axle bearing on IH986

My 986 started leaking hy-tran around the axle seal so i pull wheel and think it would be a easy fix to repl. seal and to my suprise the bearing was chewed up.I was lucky enough to get the bad bearing off of the axle and have bought a new bearing and race and now i think i will have to set the pre-load.Am i correct,and what could have caused this bearing to go bad?And what is the precedure to set pre-load?
