I'm in much the same boat. Both my wife and I have full-time jobs that bring in much more cash than we ever dreamed of. I've made some wise/lucky investments. Then, a few years back, I inherited quite a bit of money, as well as MOST of the land I now farm. I did however, make my way quite well BEFORE being handed the family farm/fortune. My father, and 4 generations before him, farmed this land. We managed to make it through the 80's. Not a lot of us were so lucky. My father struggled with the economy then. If it wasn't for his income with a construction business he owned, things might not have turned out so well. I'm not going into my personal finances here. Not the time or the place. What I am going to say is, I make a better living off of 1400 acres than ANYONE I know personally. That's done with hard work by myself, my wife, and my son. We re-invest MOST of what we make off of the farm. If I was to have to start from scratch, I'd never be able to achieve what I have. Quite simpley, it's taken the collective hard work of 7 generations of family to reach the point we have. I'm not the ultimate authority on farming. I'll never try to lay claim to that. However, I have managed to turn a profit, without the use of "borrowed money", and likely have made profits exceeding what farms of a much larger size can hope to reach. That being said, I still don't get "filthy rich" from any part or parcel of this business. It seems that some people can take a bit of skewed information, and form their opinion. I take 189 years of family history and make mine. Once again, THIS IS NOT A HIGH PROFIT BUSINESS. John

Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
