You can buy tachometers that measture speeds up to 3000 RPM. We just bought one from our local Case IH dealer (they have them for order). Think it was close to $50 or a little over. Has a rubber end on the shaft and you just hold it to the PTO shaft and away you go. Just make DARN sure your wearing short sleeves and nothing loose is close to the shaft. The best thing to do is get a tractor with 540 PTO, that or get a mower with a 1000 RPM gearbox. You have a lot of money invested in the tractor, might as well get a mower that won't tear it (or you) appart.
