Hey Mike, here's an idea: First, with the tractor not hooked up to anything, I don't see holding a mechanical tach to the end of the PTO shaft as being particularly dangerous if you wear short sleeves, NO GLOVES, and pay attention. Now, with that out of the way: Check with your fire department. We have to do an annual service test on our pumpers, and one of the checks is pump rpm. We use just such a tach to do it. If you're REAL nice, or maybe run the tractor by the firehouse, they might do it for you. The one I use is direct reading in RPM.
